Health & politics becomes a live reportPick any variable — a CDC health measure, an ACS figure, or presidential margin — and a geography (US counties, a state's counties, or a state's census tracts), and the page splits every area into fifths by that variable and compares the full detail-panel profile between the highest and lowest fifths, live. Replaces the earlier fixed comparison (health measures vs. 2024 margin only).
A Health & politics pageA new page lines up all 40 CDC health measures against 2024 presidential margin, county by county, population-weighted: which conditions run higher in strongly Republican vs. strongly Democratic counties, and by how much. Correlation across places, not a claim about people — the page says so.
Health data from CDC PLACES40 health measures — chronic disease, prevention, risk behaviors, disability, health status, and social needs — at county and census tract geography, added to the “Color by” list and the detail panel. Model-based small-area estimates, not a census count, same as this site's other demographic fields.
Statistics for a filtered setFilter with “Show only” and the panel now describes the areas that match, the way it describes a single county — population, the whole ACS profile, and the set’s own election result. Counts are summed and shares are population-weighted; medians are left out, because the mean of a set of medians is not a median. The 98 counties that swung Republican by ten points or more hold 43.5 million people and still voted Democratic by 13.7.
A front page that shows the electionThe map now opens on the 2024 presidential result by county, across the whole country, instead of on Minnesota's census tracts coloured by poverty rate. Counties also gained land area and population density, which had only ever been built for tracts, metros and states.
Connecticut fills inConnecticut was the one blank state on the county election layer. It abolished county government, and the Census Bureau replaced its eight counties with nine planning regions in 2022 — but the national returns file still reports the old counties, so nothing joined. Planning regions are built from whole towns, so the town results in the Secretary of the State's official Statement of Vote roll up to them exactly. Connecticut now carries 2016, 2020 and 2024, and the swings between them.
2016 precinctsThe precinct layer now carries two elections — 2020 and 2016 — chosen with the Election picker. 177,190 precincts in 2016; each election has its own geometry because precinct boundaries are redrawn every cycle.

Water clippingCensus tract boundaries run across open water to the state line, so Michigan rendered without its mitten and Minnesota reached into Lake Superior. Geometry is now clipped to the shoreline, which also fixed how 'zoom to state' frames the map.
